What is GeneSTAR
GeneSTAR® Marbling is a DNA-based diagnostic
test for a major gene associated with marbling in beef cattle.
It is the first gene marker for a production trait in beef cattle.
The test distinguishes between alleles of the Thyroglobulin gene.
Thyroglobulin is involved in the pathway that creates fat cells
within muscle fibres as energy storages.

GeneSTAR® Tenderness –
The first commercial gene marker test for beef tenderness.
Latest GeneSTAR Senepol Results

The latest Genestar results show that Senepols
have a higher incidence 2 star animals for the T1 and T2 tests.
The percentage of Senepol animals with 2 stars for T1 and T2 are
greater than those of the Droughtmaster, Brahman and Santa Gertrudis’s
tested during that period (as per graphs supplied by Genetic Solutions).
Application of GeneSTAR Tenderness for Commercial
Herds
Buying 2-STAR sires is the quickest way that
a commercial herd can influence the future tenderness of the herd.
2 –STAR sires with an appropriate EBV profile and good structural
and breeding soundness is the recommended way forward. If there
are concerns about a high level of 0 and/or 1-STAR animals in
the herd, an AI programme with 2-STAR semen may be a useful strategy.
The objective should be to breed herds with a high frequency of
2-STAR animals.
Additional Markers increase the power of GeneSTAR
On March 7 at the Spry’s Shorthorn Sale,
Genetic Solutions launched their new upgraded GeneSTAR test. They
have been working on validation of these three new markers for
the past few months and the standard GeneSTAR product now includes
a multi marker Marbling test with 3 markers and a multi marker
Tenderness test with 4 markers (previously they had 2 Marbling
and 2 Tenderness markers). The release of these additional markers
maintains the position of GeneSTAR as the world leading suite
of DNA marker tests. These tests are available now and all samples
received on or after the 1st of February will be tested for all
7 markers. Results should be available by the end of March.
